Generation De Next!!!!

It’s another edition of Generation De Next! Guess who we have on board today….I’m so excited-her article got me really inspired and I’m sure it will come in handy and timely for someone today. In case you are wondering who she is…… I present to you Tosin Amakhabi, the Creative Director of THOSYN 502! *applause*

THOSYN 502… The Perfection of Beauty!

During my undergraduate days at Covenant University, I never thought I was going to venture into business. The mere thought of "business" freaked me out. I wanted to work in an office.  I had this dream of being an HR consultant working for the best HR firms and maybe owning my own HR consultancy outfit someday *sigh*

Anyway, I graduated with a Second Class Upper Division in Sociology in 2007 and was really looking forward to living my dream. NYSC passed. Unfortunately, yours truly wrote a billion job tests, attended a million interviews but no HR firm not even a sales girl job was in view for whole one year and half.

I have always been fascinated by weddings. The colours, the designs, the venue arrangements, the cakes, the dresses, ooohh the dresses. Beautiful dresses and accessories that would match every clothing item. I watched weddings on TV; Style/entertainment magazines were my regular companions.  But all I saw in all this was a mere hobby; nothing more.

However, I got bored. Oh yeah! BORED stiff, sitting in my mum's confectionery store. So I hooked up with a lady who made bridal accessories, that is, Fascinators, beads and wire-works plus events venue decoration. In 4 months, I was through.

I became hungry for more.

With the financial assistance of my fiancé (we are married now.. *wink*), I enrolled for a makeup course at House of Tara in mid-2009.

Armed with all these acquired skills, one would expect that the money would start to roll in. But the reverse was the case. That's when it hit me that, starting up a business is not "BEANS".

I continued to send out my CVs and managed to get a small HR job. The fulfillment I got from the job was a far cry from what I feel when I make fascinators or do makeup.

But I didn't stop my passion. I pushed on. I advertised my skill on every social media outlet available and my clientele began to grow. It didn't take long before the returns on the business coupled with the level of work became overwhelming that I had to resign a year after I took up the job offer. Church choirs, and ushers patronised my works (corsage and fascinators) and several brides too.

I became better. I learned new patterns and designs by the help of the Holy Spirit.  When I want to create something new all I do is pray and lock myself up somewhere. And it comes! And sometimes it just drops on days I least expect it. I'm usually amazed at the outcome of most of my works. I also scouted for ideas via the internet (Thank you Google!!!)

Thosyn 502 launched out fully as a business entity in January 2012. I design fascinators, bridal bouquets, corsages and offer professional makeup services.

It’s not been smooth road but God has been faithful.  My major challenge is in the aspect of charging for work done. Sometimes I would do a job almost free! Had to deal with that o. Man must wack..lol. Another is client sourcing. But thank God for social media, a major chunk of my clientele were acquired from Facebook, twitter and BBM. And of course referrals...

What drives me is the joy I see on my client's face after delivering a job and how elegant the train/brides look using my product. My goal is to satisfy every client, bringing their dream to reality as every bride has a dream of what she wants her wedding to look like.

There is still a lot of work to be done.  At Thosyn 502 there is no limit! In 2012, we worked with over 30 brides and we plan on increasing that tally in 2013.

Thosyn 502 is also delving into the fashion scene with special focus on bride/bridesmaids' dresses. We plan to become a one-stop shop for all bridal/wedding accessories. We also see a clothing line in view. Let's keep our fingers crossed, shall we? *wink*
